"Teach someone to fish and they’re a grinner for life"
As a native Floridian, fishing and boating has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. My grandpa, “Pop Pop,” first showed me how to cast a line, set a hook and reel ‘em in from the seawall at Young Park. From then on, I was fishing whenever and wherever possible. I was fortunate to spend summer's growing up canal fishing in Long Island with my family. We'd spend every waking moment clamming, crabbing or just plain old fishing off the dock. We’d also go offshore fishing with for bluefish – and sometimes end up with a shark as an added bonus. My uncle's 13-foot Boston Whaler was the first boat I learned how to operate; I immediately fell in love with the skill.
My early 20’s lured me to Seattle, Washington where soon I found myself even further from home on a commercial salmon fishing boat in Bristol Bay, Alaska. Unfortunately, in my second season in Alaska, catastrophe struck. My entire fishing camp caught fire and burned to the ground along with 36 boats, including the one I was set to work on. My commercial fishing career was over as soon as it started.
Back in the lower 48, a good friend I met along the way turned me on to fly fishing. Soon I was addicted. From steelhead fishing on the Olympic Peninsula to learning how to row a drift boat on the Yakima River in Eastern Washington, I was hooked. It wasn’t long before my dreams of fishing the “legendary” rivers of Montana and Idaho became a reality.
After a few years, being thousands of miles away from friends and family became too much to bear, I moved back to Florida. I was soon working full-time in the family air conditioning and heating business, but spent every free moment on the water fishing…
Inshore (Indian River Lagoon, Mosquito Lagoon) fishing for redfish and snook, offshore (Fort Pierce, Sebastian) fishing for mahi-mahi and other sportfish, chasing giant Tarpon in Homosassa, experiencing everything Florida Bay and the Florida Keys have to offer, you name it I've of immersed myself in it. All the while somehow finding time to make it back out to Montana for some trout fishing a couple weeks a year.
As time went on, my love for fishing and being on the water grew so much I decided to get my 50-ton masters USCG license, then I bought a 17-foot Dragonfly poling skiff for Florida and a 16-foot Ro Deville drift boat for Montana. I now spend my winters in Florida taking people fishing for snook, trout, redfish, tarpon, pompano, mahi-mahi, sailfish, cobia, snapper, and more. We either fish inshore on my skiff or I operate their vessel inshore or offshore. During the summer months you'll find me in southwest Montana on the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Jefferson, Madison and Ruby Rivers showing folks a good time.
Let's go fishin' n grinnin'!
